Yuri and Yaoi

Yuri and Yaoi

I understand the attraction Yuri and Yaoi has on teens these days, but that doesn’t stop it from being a bit bothersome to me. I’m a bit of a purist when it comes to character pairings and I find it slightly offensive when two straight characters who aren’t romantically involved in a narrative series are slashed together (such as Kirk and Spock or Phoenix Wright and Edgeworth). It’s also troublesome when you have legitimately homosexual characters and everyone thinks you’re attempting to cash in on yaoi.

I wrote a comic series when I was in college called “Patty” and it was about a teenage girl who was discovering that she’s a lesbian. She falls in love with a girl named Nadia, but struggles with her love because her family is homophobic. Unlike what most guys tend to focus on when they draw lesbian couples, I wanted to focus on how the emotional relationship developed and to not dwell on the raw sexual aspects. I published it on LuLu.com, but looking back on it now I realize how bad of an artist I was back then. I have been thinking of re-writing it a lot lately, but am wary now because of how strong Yaoi and Yuri is in popular culture today. In many ways I think Yaoi and Yuri undermine homosexual behavior and give people a false impression of what it’s like to truly be gay.

Personally, I sometimes likes to read yaoi and slash people togheter, but for the most part... I read because of the caracters and the story.
I think you should re-draw it. If you ever do re-draw the story, can you post it here? I would totally read it! :)

Personally I am not into yaoi or yuri, being a Christian and straight. But I have worked for a gay couple and have had a few girls say I look like their dream girl. I for one think if you want to write and or draw something, who cares what other people say. it's your viewpoint, it's your story, they can get off the ride whenever they want.

I personally love slashing together characters like Kirk and Spock, but I'd rather see them acting like they usually do in the show than in an explicit relationship.

I agree about the fact that the yuri and yaoi market has caused people to focus too much on the sexual side of homosexual stories and not the more serious side, but I definitely disagree with the part about being "offended" by people "slashing" straight characters. The whole point of fandom in its uncorrupted form is to be able to enjoy what you like with no boundaries or judgement..

Just my opinion, though. :P To each his own.

EW! Gay porn, who would WANT to read that??? BLEH!

Eww...who would want to read pornography anyway? That's disgusting. I like the actual story better. You should rewrite that. It sounds interesting.

I used to love Yaoi, but now I'd much rather have a story with a gay relationship than a story with just gay porn in it. I actually prefer a story about the relationship than the sex.

Actually, there are many, many yuri and yaoi comics and manga that deal very little with sex, or deal with sex in a respectful way. Just because weeaboos only stick to the porn aspects doesn't mean the whole genre does. An example of a really good yuri manga with only one, implied sex scene: Girlfriends. It has slight fanservice, but it's a touching story about how a girl deals with her love for her best friend and how her best friend eventually recognises her feelings. It's sweet and emotional.

Oh god, I enjoy gay romances myself in graphic novels but I hate it when there either is just gay scenes every chapter or idiots like this think that's all there should be to make it a good graphic novel. I read those kind of stories for the romance story itself. I can live without the mature rated scenes.
