Q and A - Books and Characters
If you want to make comics, these two books are your holy bible. Understanding Comics and Making Comics by Scott McCloud. Understanding Comics deconstructs the how and why comics work, while Making Comics takes those principals and teaches you how to construct comics. There are a lot of books about how to draw, and about perspective and inking, etc. But there aren’t many which can go into such perfect detail on what makes comics so special. Anyone serious about making comics should definitely check them out and I can’t recommend them highly enough.
As for other characters, I have a ton of them, but most simply aren’t ready or useable yet. Here’s just a small sample of odd-ball characters I don’t get to use very often from left to right: Janus the Elf, Percy Phillips, Magician Malady, and Dumbbell.

I read his three books about once a year for inspiration in all areas of art and life. Sequential art is pretty amazing.
