Q and A - Backgrounds

Backgrounds are a comic artist’s worse nightmare. We all struggle with them because they’re a pain in the neck to do, and yet they’re so essential. While some comics require more backgrounds than others, the important thing to remember is to just have FUN with them.

I was under the impression that the phrase was "worst nightmare".

Third panel totally gives off a Studio Ghibli vibe.

Starting with some base colors can really help with getting the right feel for the panel, as in the first two panels of this comic.

What you may want to look into is scenery drawing tutorials and read through the tutorial KREO linked too.

@Pimppi: Watch out guys, we've got an amazing troll over here. Go back to DeviantART; it's easier to find people that would actually take your crap seriously instead of just laughing at how badly you're trying to insult them.

Cut out the panels below the first two.

You'll have the best SYAC comic ever.

I can never find any tutorials for drawing backgrounds. Sure it may not be too hard when you just have to make the inside of a room, but if you want to make a natural environment? Those natural elements are tricky, but no one bothers to share the tricks to them.

Plus, even in simple environments, there is a lot that could be said about ways to properly distinguish the characters from the backgrounds, a list of do's and don't or common mistakes, but nobody has ever tried to compile a list for these.
People just seem to think "Oh, make a background" is information enough.
Gee, thanks for helping people improve their craft.

What you said in panels 5 and 6 is more information than I have ever seen anyone share on creating backgrounds. I would comment on how meager that information is but I also don't want to downplay that it is actually useful and welcome advice.

BTW, how many of these backgrounds did you just make for this page, and how many did you grab from drawings you already made?

I'm not a fan of having to draw backgrounds... characters interest me far more! Occasionally when I'm warmed up, a half-decent BG pops out. It's usually way off on perspective, but hopefully is at least engaging and interesting.

Yay! Tx for the colouring tips. My colour sense sucks. Gradients are a saving grace! n__n (I also avoid colouring by doing mostly B & W comics!) http://comixjammer.deviantart.com/gallery/29027885#/d398jts

Sorry I get confused, what I do once that I pick the two colors?

@speedcow12

Did you ever come by (epic voice)

!!! THE DISNEY COMIC STRIP ARTIST'S KIT !!!

These little papers have helped me along the way, not a day goes by when I don't use at least one of it's guidelines.

You do realize the first 2 panels are great 'meme' material.
