@Adobson At first, I was a little sad that you moved to the story format, but I'm actually really starting to like the story comic format. Even more than I liked your single panels. Your persistence with doing what you wanted with the comic has won me over =]
Also, to the comments about Carl: Perhaps Carl's appearance was drawn to reflect Carl as seen through Tenko's eyes. When he was younger, the drawings made him seem meaner, grumpier, and older. The older Tenko doesn't see those things in Carl as much anymore and so that was reflected in the art.
Then again, it could just be a simple character redesign.
I'm not an artist (though I did take an art studio in college), but I still appreciate the stories. Yeah, they're fairly mundane, but as my professors in school often said (paraphrasing of course), the true writer, the truly skilled writer, will find a world shattering conflict in the mundane and convey it to the reader. I feel like this is what these stories do, just with added pictures.
Though I will agree that it is creepy to see Carl with trimmed eyebrows and a smile on his face.
Despite what's being said I think Carl's character is pretty coherent here. Carl is an art professor and his entire premise is experience. Here he's just using his experience as a motivator instead of straight out criticism.
I noticed a few people saying they think this kind of story is boring and uninteresting. I must disagree on that. I love those types of stories. Ok, I agree, the plots and outcomes might be a little predictable, but I still like them and actually hope to see more of them.
I don't like Tenko as a person, but I do feel simpathy for him. You can see he has changed ways from the other comic to this one, and I liked this change. It's like the kid is finally realising that he still has a lot to learn. I know this might sound cliche, but you have to admit this is a change that most people go through.
These arcs are awesome and I will always hope they will keep coming.
Because I keep forgetting to say this, but ... Carl DOES look different and all, but whenever he's angry it looks like our awesome comic artist exaggerates his eyebrows and his frown-y face. Never mind that frowning can make your face more wrinkled ( right? Not crazy to think that? ). So I ... well, just don't think this is a huge difference. The colors are a little different, but really - when have we had a picture of relaxed, happy Carl to go by? Never mind Dobson was likely working on his character and as these comics have gone on he's found the tone he likes ... ?
ALSO: if he's working as a recruiter for his college then playing nice is better than yelling and screaming. You don't want them to know that you're hell on wheels as a teacher until they're all ready enrolled and in their first class, X3.
... I'll stop rambling now and likely never comment again, XDDD.
Carl really is what many of us wish for in an art teacher it is very rare to find a teacher who will criticize something honestly, My current art teacher (final year of High school) doesn't criticize peoples artworks properly rather then straight out tell someone what is wrong with a work she will skirt around the subject, Pity all the decent art teachers left for greener pastures when i need real criticism =(
A lot of people are irritated about the personality differences, but I think it makes a lot of sense for Carl's attitude to be different in this one. He's working with college-applicant level artists instead of elementary schoolers who think they own the world (coughYoungTenko) and he gets to see a student who had a sort of epiphany at his words years after the fact.
Additionally, looking back at his previous appearance you'll notice he's sour from the start and seems regretful after tearing into Tenko, which makes the 'older-and-wiser' argument for his change in attitude a more likely win.
Also, prediction: Carl's going to place a lot of commentary about how much the art has improved and not have anti-comic bias, making his criticism more fair and likely to give the kid a shot in college, probably with some mention of 'if you can dedicate yourself and continue improving at this rate'.
O
whats with the last panel.. the kid is turning into a pscyhopath lol o_O
